Art Space and Roadside Attraction

Artistic Curiosities | unexpected wonders

The mural on the outside of our home (Old Neersville Fire Department) features a country road which rises up from the diabas granite and red clay soil particular to the Shenandoah Valley, winds past farm fields and vinyards, wildflowers, and evergreens and continues on into the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This road signifies how our individual artistic journeys take us through varied landscapes and concepts, topographies, cultures and times—and continue on into the distance where new experiences and perspectives await!

Just as a roadside attraction is a welcome diversion on a long and boring car trip, Wayside Wondercabinet offers wonders and curiosities unlike any other. All are welcome!

Events and Exhibitions

Since we opened in 2020—during the height of a pandemic—we have presented a variety of experiences, exhibitions, events, and episodes as the impulse hits us! While we prefer not to do intensive programming, we instead strive to stay open to the possibilities of collaboration which may, or may not involve art. Or sometimes involve art. Or always involve art. Or things disguised as art. Or art disguised as curiosities.

Locker Room gallery

Since our space is located in an old fire department, most events and activities take place in an old fire truck bay that we have turned into a white cube space. The permanent collection of art and curiosities is housed in what used to be the old locker room for the fire and rescue personnel. The urinal in the locker room is functional, and not a ready-made by Marcel Duchamp. Sorry, art joke.
